LOVE MISSISSIPPI

As a Yankee turned born-again Southerner, I felt the need to design something that showed my love for the beautiful state of Mississippi. Earlier this year, I came up with the LoveMississippi design and had it plastered it on shirts, posters and even my car. The popularity of the shirts has gone far beyond my expectations! We currently sell shirts in four retail stores across the state and hope to be adding more very soon! The demand for shirts has become so great, that I have now decided to sell them only at wholesale to retail locations.

I love Mississippi.

That’s right, I said it.

I was born and raised a Yankee in Rochester, NY. I never thought much of (or even about) the South. As a young girl, my only thoughts about Mississippi were directly from books I had read and movies I had watched, and that mainly consisted of Huckleberry Finn. I thought everyone in Mississippi, or at least the kids all went around barefoot. Essentially I believed Mississippi was probably stuck back in the 1920′s. I know now that this is all far from the truth.

Mississippi is a beautiful state full of untouched land, fields of trees, catfish ponds, red clay dirt and people that are as sweet as the tea they make. Honestly, there are a few things I miss about living in the North, but I have fallen in love Mississippi. I love the weather, I love the beauty, I love the long spring, summer and fall. I especially love the short winters.

My introduction to the state was when I came to visit Belhaven University in Jackson. I can’t say that I wasn’t hesitant about going to school in Mississippi, but I felt like Belhaven was the school for me (despite it being in Mississippi) and I made the 18 hour move down to the South. There were four of us friends that made that long trek from Rochester, NY to Jackson, MS. All of us were hesitant, expecting culture shock, and hoping that not everyone would be barefoot. The joke was on me when I was the only of our group to acquire a southern accent, love all the fried food, and most importantly fall in love with a Mississippi boy.

I had fallen in love with a Mississippian, but I had a while to go before I actually loved Mississippi. After my husband and I married we moved to Mechanicsburg, PA for a couple years. Then we were lead back to Mississippi. I dreaded moving back, and I didn’t have much grace for living in a small college town (Starkville) with no Target. I asked God to give me grace and more importantly to give me a love for the state, the people and the culture of Mississippi. He granted my request. I can honestly say that there is not one other place I would rather live at this moment in my life. I know God may lead us other places, but I would be content in Mississippi. (Yes, even if the nearest Target is 2 hours away…that’s supposed to change though)

The idea for this design is my love for the great state of Mississippi. T-shirts are already in production as are posters/prints. They will be debuted and available for purchase in front of Renee Reedy Photography and Cinematography Studio at the Columbus Market Street Festival coming up. A Letterpress Printing Extravaganza!

Yesterday I attended a Letterpress Printing Extravaganza. I printed my very own letterpress poster! It’s been a dream of mine to get my hands on a press. That dream has come true. I used a mid 20th century sign press located in the very cool traveling Letterpress studio truck of Kyle Durrie. (type-truck.com) The truck had made a stop in Columbus, MS today at The Southern Letterpress & Job Printing run by fellow Rochester, NY native Jessica Peterson. Jessica runs a Vandercook SP-15 press. These Ladies of Letterpress were all too happy to share their knowledge and excitement with the group as they showed us how they set type, mix ink and make beautiful prints. I also loved getting to meet new locals who are interested in print design.

Portfolio Review

As a senior at Belhaven University, I am required to put together not only my most updated portfolio pieces, but a display to showcase my work for a end of semester review. I had a lot of fun coming up with an idea that went along with the Sparrow Ink Design brand and was an interesting way to show my work. Here is what my display looked like:

I’ve been working like crazy trying to finish up this semester and one of my main projects is a major portfolio update. So to go along with that, the website portfolio has now been updated, and received a new navigation and slideshow!

Also, tomorrow is a big portfolio review day at Belhaven University and I have a special display in the works so be watching out for a post about that soon showing the results! I really hope it turns out as good as it looks in my head!
